On Monday Oct. 28th, scholar and activist Kevin Anderson gave a talk and led discussion at Black Coffee Coop in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood. Entitled, “Casting a Critical Eye on Foucault’s Concept of Resistance, in Light of Marcuse and Marx,” the lecture was presented by the West Coast Chapter of the Marxist-Humanist Organization and the Commoners’ Club. The event attracted an audience of over thirty workers, and activists, most of whom were young adults.

This event represents an important benchmark for Marxist-Humanism in Seattle: It was Kevin Anderson’s first time ever speaking in Seattle, and the first time in a long time that any Marxist Humanist speaker has been brought to the city. The lecture was also the inaugural presentation of the Commoner’s Club, a new organization in Seattle this year to provoke discussion the city into a discussion about the commons and provide a forum for the ideas of the radical Left.

The organizers are excited by the success of this event. There is clearly a need for more such events, and we welcome the birth of the Commoners’ Club that is continuing to develop programming to meet this need.
