The reader has become acquainted with various points of view relating to a problem which in one manner or another is of concern to every thoughtful person in our time. The reader has become participant in this discussion. One does not have to be a philosopher to note the essential differences in approaching a resolution of the problem at hand. We will also make an attempt, without pretensions of providing a final answer, to express our own opinion.
Of primary importance is a formulation of the essential aspect of the problem grappled with by each of the authors in this book despite the obvious differences separating them. This is important because it may sometimes seem that various approaches to the question simply signify discussions concerning various sides or aspects, but not (often opposing) means of resolving one and the same question. This one and the same question must be constantly borne in mind in as concise and sharp a formulation as possible. Only then can it be decided, following the arguments presented by the authors, which path points towards a solution, and which to a dead end. Otherwise we will be left with the impression that each approach contains partial glimpses of the truth and, equally, that each contains biases as well as mistakes. But the truth was never born of a simple summation of «various» aspects or through the unification of differing points of view.

The development of crisis theory within the Marxian tradition has been central to much of our work in the last several years. The view that the various fragmentary references to crisis theory in the three volumes of Capital constitute a fully developed coherent structure, which only requires diligent exegesis, is a view that has never seemed sensible to us.
Recent research into the evolution of Marx’s manuscripts in connection with the production of the Marx-Engels-Gesamtausgabe (MEGA), the historical-critical edition of the complete writings of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, has confirmed our understanding in a very exciting way. It is now clear that Marx never ceased to develop his thinking on the phenomena of crises in capitalism, and never ceased to discard earlier formulations; for example, at the end of his life he was focused on questions of credit and crisis. Monthly Review rarely presents its readers with discussions of economic theory at a relatively high degree of abstraction; this, however, is such an occasion. We trust that the author’s exemplary clarity will permit ready access to readers with any degree of interest in Marx’s theory; for those who wish to become familiar with the conceptual outline of Marx’s work, we cannot do better than to recommend the author’s An Introduction to the Three Volumes of Karl Marx’s Capital (Monthly Review Press, 2012). —The Editors

En pasado mes de diciembre se celebró un acto homenaje al filósofo y activista Francisco Fernández Buey. Paco, que también era miembro del consejo de redacción de la revista Papeles de relaciones ecosociales y cambio global, reunió al recordarle a distintos amigos y compañeros que se dieron cita este día y participaron en las dos mesas coloquio que se realizaron. El texto que Jaime Osorio ha elaborado con el nombre Estado, biopoder y exclusión contiene una serie de ensayos que el autor, sociólogo chileno radicado hace ya varios años en México, ha venido desarrollando en los últimos tiempos. Osorio es conocido por su desarrollo de temas y propuestas conceptuales legadas por lo que en algún momento de la historia de la teoría social latinoamericano fue conocida popularmente como la “teoría de la dependencia”. Osorio ha defendido en numerosos ensayos y libros el carácter actual, en tanto que crítico del orden social vigente y de la epistemología que regula dicho orden, de tal teoría. En tiempos más recientes desarrolló el concepto de super explotación del trabajo elaborado por Marini bajo el nombre de “explotación redoblada”, como el mecanismo prevalenciente en las sociedades de tipo dependiente (o en otra jerga, periféricas) para la extracción de plus-valor, o sea, de trabajo no pagado. Así mismo, desafiando gran parte del “mainstreim” que versa sobre la teoría política, ha reivindicado el lugar central de Lenin en ella. Para ello se ha servido de la idea lukacsiana de la “actualidad de la revolución” como el mecanismo que pone en el aquí y en el ahora, las condiciones de posibilidad de trascender la sociedad moderna en su versión capitalista.

Vesa Oittinen is professor at the Aleksanteri Institute, University of Helsinki, Finland, and author of many books. (Peter Lang 1996); Marx ja Venäjä (ed., Aleksanteri Papers, 2006); and Marx-Engels Gesamtausgabe (MEGA) ja Marxin uudelleen löytäminen (ed. with Juha Koivisto, Vastapaino 2010).
Andrey Maidansky is professor of philosophy at the Institute of Economics and Management in Taganrog, Russia. He has published several studies on Spinoza, Marxism and philosophy of science and contributes regulary to the main Russian philosophical journal Voprosy Filosofii. They interviewed Marcello Musto about the significance of newly published works by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels.
Musto teaches at the Department of Political Science of York University (Toronto, Canada). He has carried out researches on the Marx Engels Gesamtausgabe and is the editor and a contributing author of: Sulle tracce di un fantasma. El neoliberalismo como «proyecto de clase»: Entrevista con David Harvey
Por Elasa BouletDavid Harvey – Esto depende de la manera en que se define el modelo de acumulación flexible. Si se concibe el modelo para revitalizar el capitalismo en su conjunto, yo diría que sí, pero que ya fracasó desde el principio. Si el modelo se diseñó para concentrar y aumentar el poder de la clase capitalista, y en particular de determinadas franjas de la clase capitalista, ha sido todo un éxito. El crack de 2008 no fue sin duda un acontecimiento especial si se contemplan todos los cracks que han tenido lugar desde 1997: el de Asia oriental y sudoriental en 1998, los de Sudamérica en 2001. Todo ese periodo se caracterizó por breves etapas de crecimientos interrumpidas por otros tantos cracks, pero es indiscutible que estos cracks desempeñaron una función muy importante en la consolidación de una riqueza y poder cada vez mayores en fracciones cada vez más pequeñas de la clase capitalista. Creo que 2008 marcó simplemente un paso más en esta vía hacia la concentración de riqueza y poder. Por mi parte, comprendo el neoliberalismo ante todo como un proyecto de clase, de consolidación y de refuerzo de la dominación. Creo que 2008 no marcó el final de todo esto, una crisis de este proyecto de clase, sino un paso más.

El passat 23 de març una trentena de persones va assistir a la taula rodona que va tenir lloc a l’Espai Jove l’Estrella de Vilassar de Dalt.
L’acte enmarcat dins les activitats del Maresme Feminista i organitzat per Arran Vilassar-Cabrils, va comptar amb la prèsencia de la Elena Idoate del Seminari Taifa, la Lucía de la PAH, la Blanca i la Rocío, dones afectades per la hipoteca.
En primer lloc, la Elena va obrir la taula amb una introducció de caràcter més aviat teòric sobre les estructures patriarcals i capitalistes, la seva interacció i les conseqüències d’aquesta, traduïdes en l’actual situació de despossesió social i crisi profundament feminitzada; a més, la ponent va fer una breu exposició i elogi del feminisme com a eina per afrontar la ofensiva patriarcal i capitalista.

Lenin, figura histórica ¿Cuáles fueron las corrientes ideológicas que influyeron directamente en la figura de Lenin? Es decir, ¿me podría explicar un poco el Lenin de juventud premarxista?
Probablemente, la primera influencia que tuvo Lenin fue la de los populistas o “narodniks”, que habían desempeñado un papel importante en la Rusia de los años setenta-ochenta. Incluso por motivos familiares, porque su hermano estaba directamente vinculado a esta forma de resistencia, populista o “narodnik”, ante el absolutismo zarista. O sea que yo diría que la primera influencia fue esta, y inmediatamente después ya la lectura de Marx y de los marxistas de la época.

Raya Dunayevskaya died in 1987 aged 77, but her ideas remain alive and to-be-lived-by today, a permanent reproach to thought’s accommodation to an intolerable present. Dunayevskaya inspired and inspires a special enthusiasm, evidenced here by the meticulousness of the editing: no passing reference to text or event is left without a footnote. The scholarly apparatus is not there to obscure the original writing, but to make sure no prior knowledge – of history, of politics, of ‘isms’ – is taken for granted. The result is that, in its footnoted entirety, the book becomes an ideal introduction to the agonistic drama of twentieth-century life and politics: global conflicts are pursued right down to the minutiae which make and break friendships. This is entirely in the spirit of Dunayevskaya, the revolutionary activist who believed that Detroit auto-workers fighting speed-ups and mechanization on the shop floor were better equipped to understand world history than professional intellectuals.
